President Piñera appoints new ambassadors

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrés Allamand, reported that the President of the Republic, Sebastián Piñera, appointed as Ambassador of Chile in Austria and Permanent Representative before the International Organizations based in Vienna, the career diplomat Belén Sapag Muñoz de la Peña, who has already received the respective approval.

He also reported the appointment as Ambassador of career diplomats Fernando Velasco Parada and Oscar Fuentes Lira, who will assume as Director of Multilateral Regional Integration and Chief of Staff of the Undersecretariat of Foreign Relations, respectively.

Fernando Velasco Parada

Fernando Velasco has a degree in History from the Catholic University of Valparaíso and a graduate of the "Andrés Bello" Diplomatic Academy. In addition, he is a graduate of the Master in International Relations of the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile.

Abroad he has served in the Chilean Embassies in Japan, Peru and Argentina, and Mexico.

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he has worked in the Planning Directorate, in the General Directorate of Foreign Policy, in the Cabinet of the Undersecretary of Foreign Relations, and in the South American Directorate.

At the time of his appointment, he was serving as Minister-Counselor of the Chilean Embassy in Mexico.

Belén Sapag Muñoz de la Peña

Belén Sapag is a lawyer from the University of Chile and a graduate of the "Andrés Bello" Diplomatic Academy. She has a Master's in Foreign Policy from the University of Santiago and a graduate of the Executive Leadership Program of the JFK School of Government of Harvard University.

Abroad, she served the Permanent Mission of Chile to the United Nations and the Embassy of Chile in Argentina. She was a Political Coordinator in the Security Council and an elected member of the UNIFEM Consultative Committee. She was a Commissioner at the Embassy in Malaysia and a scholarship in Japan in the Young Leaders Program (JICA).

In Chile, she served as Deputy Director of European Affairs, Head of the Foreign Service Department in the Cabinet of the Minister, and in the Directorate of Special Policy.

At the time of her appointment, she was serving as Minister-Counselor, Chief of Staff of the Undersecretary of Foreign Relations.

Oscar Fuentes Lira

Oscar Fuentes is an Execution Engineer, with a major in Marketing, from the Diego Portales University and a graduate of the “Andrés Bello” Diplomatic Academy. In addition, he pursued advanced studies in international business management at Georgetown University.

Abroad, he has represented the country in the Chilean Embassies in Japan, the United States, Argentina, and Peru.

In Chile, he carried out work in various directions, both in the administrative field, as well as in a protocolar, consular and political level. His last position in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was as Deputy Director of the South American Directorate.

At the time of his appointment, he was serving as Minister-Counselor of the Chilean Embassy in Argentina.
