During his participation in the High-Level Segment of the 58th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto Van Klaveren, announced Chile's candidacy for re-election to this space for dialogue and cooperation, for the period 2026-2028.

In his speech, the Minister reaffirmed the commitment of our country to the Council and called “to promote constructive dialogue with all actors of the universal system, without exclusions, supporting the independent and technical work of the Office of the High Commissioner”.

In this regard, he stressed that with his re-election, “Chile hopes to continue its work in the promotion and protection of human rights as a permanent policy, consolidating the consensus established in the 1993 Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action on the universality, indivisibility, interrelatedness and interdependence of these rights”.

Our country has been a member of the Human Rights Council on four occasions: 2009 - 2011; 2012- 2014; 2018 - 2020 and 2023-2025. During these periods, Chile has supported the independent and technical work of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

In 2025, the Minister emphasized, “Chile will maintain its focus on environmental protection, gender equality, the human rights situation in Latin America, particularly in the cases of Nicaragua and Venezuela, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the occupied territories of Palestine, the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, among other issues”.

He also reiterated Chile's commitment to multilateralism, affirming that “the promise of peace and security that gave rise to the United Nations after World War II cannot be disregarded due to short-term interests or considerations. Chile is committed to a more solid multilateralism, with human rights at the center of its action. We want this forum to continue to be a space for effective dialogue and committed to the protection of all people and their rights: civil, political, economic, social and cultural”, he concluded.
