Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren, met with the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, who is in Chile to visit Antarctica alongside the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, and the Foreign Affairs Minister himself, in order to see the effects of the climate crisis on the white continent.

During the meeting, they talked about the challenges of this visit and also about the expectations for the twenty-eighth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), to be held in Dubai between November 30th and December 12th.

In this regard, the Foreign Affairs Minister referred to the initiative that Chile is leading with Iceland called "Ambition on Melting Ice", also known as "friends of the cryosphere", which has the support of 23 countries and seeks to coordinate actions to disseminate scientific evidence on the serious impacts of climate change in polar regions and mid-latitude glaciers.

They also discussed the role that Chile is playing as president of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), a position that the country assumed on July 27, 2023.

They also discussed the crisis in the Middle East. The Foreign Affairs Minister reiterated Chile's condemnation of the Hamas attack, and pointed out that there is deep concern over the military operation in Gaza, for which reason the country has demanded compliance with international humanitarian law, the protection of civilians, an end to the attacks and the blockade.
