Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Public Works sign agreement to promote Chile's hosting of the BBNJ Agreement Secretariat

Monday, January 06th 2025

The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Gloria de la Fuente; the Undersecretary of Public Works, Danilo Núñez, and the National Director of Architecture of the Ministry of Public Works, Loreto Wahr, signed today an agreement with the goal of establishing a joint work to promote that the Technical Secretariat of the BBNJ Agreement on oceanic protection in the high seas, which Chile seeks to host, be located in Valparaíso.

With this instrument, the alternatives for the establishment of what would be the headquarters will be studied, through a technical unit that will provide assistance on the necessary requirements for its habilitation, as well as the realization of projects in their different stages.

This is another step forward in the efforts to promote Chile's candidacy as host country for one of the most important agreements on ocean governance, promoting the decentralization of the United Nations system and consolidating the country's leadership in the protection of the marine environment, with a view to sustainable development.

In addition, installing the Secretariat of this international instrument in the country would bring benefits at both the local and national levels, contributing to the scientific community and establishing an approach to countries with an interest in protecting biodiversity in the high seas.
