Minister van Klaveren participated in the Extraordinary Meeting of Foreign Ministers of CELAC
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren, participated in the Extraordinary Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers of the Summit of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), convened in connection with the diplomatic situation between Mexico and Ecuador.
In his speech, the Minister stressed the importance of Ecuador and Mexico being able to resolve this incident peacefully.
"We believe it is very positive that Mexico has announced its recourse to the International Court of Justice in The Hague. This demonstrates Mexico's vocation for the peaceful settlement of disputes. We hope that Ecuador will also attend and express its position, and I believe that we must preserve one of the most relevant values of CELAC, which is precisely the consecration of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace," he said.
In the same manner, the Minister reiterated his condemnation of the Ecuadorian police raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, pointing out that "the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations establishes that the premises of diplomatic missions are inviolable and that the agents of the receiving State may not enter them without the consent of the head of the respective mission. And this principle admits of no exception whatsoever".
