Minister participates in commemoration of International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

Friday, November 29th 2024

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren, participated in a ceremony to commemorate the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, held at the offices of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution N°32/40 B, which established November 29 of each year as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, in commemoration of the adoption, in 1947, of the Resolution 181 of the same General Assembly, which established the partition of Palestine, stipulating the creation of a Jewish State and an Arab State in Palestine.

In his speech, the Minister stated that “77 years after its adoption, Resolution 181 remains unimplemented, impeding the objective of realizing the inalienable right of self-determination of the Palestinian people; to establish their own State, with internationally recognized and duly respected borders”.

The minister added that this day of commemoration finds us at one of the most tragic moments in the history of the Palestinian people. “Since the Hamas terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023 - which Chile has condemned from the very first moment - we have witnessed an extremely disproportionate response from Israel.”

For this reason, he stated that it is necessary for “the international community to take urgent measures and press for a definitive cessation of hostilities, the protection of the civilian population and progress towards a lasting and definitive peace process for all parties. That is why our country, together with a relevant number of States, is currently participating in two relevant multilateral efforts: the Global Partnership for a Two-State Solution and the Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza”.

Furthermore, he noted that “Chile calls for the fulfillment of the provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice, as well as to collaborate with the investigation conducted by the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. The decisions of both multilateral bodies must be complied with, regardless of the positions we hold on this conflict. Failure to do so would undermine the foundations of the rules-based international system that we have worked so hard to build”.

“A lasting peace between the State of Israel and the State of Palestine must be achieved. All actors at the global level must make the necessary efforts to make this a reality. We are convinced that the Palestinian people have the inalienable right to become a sovereign state, to live in peace and security with their neighbors,” concluded the Foreign Affairs Minister.

The commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People was attended by the Secretary of the ECLAC Commission, Luis Yáñez; the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Chile, María José Torres, and the Ambassador of the State of Palestine, Vera Baboun.
