Minister participates in closing ceremony of the World Press Freedom Day Conference
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren, participated in the closing ceremony of the World Press Freedom Day 2024 Conference, an international meeting organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) and the Government of Chile, which was held at the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center.
In his speech, the Minister emphasized that this "has been an opportunity to make visible and raise awareness of the violence faced by media workers, including those who have lost their lives in the exercise of their duties".
He also pointed out that "the international community must actively protect journalists and communicators in general and those dedicated to environmental issues in particular. To protect them is to protect our planet. Without their work, it will be much more difficult to have a citizenry that is properly informed about these issues".
Lastly, the minister concluded that "as a country, we are committed to continue working to protect freedom of the press and promote journalism involved in the environmental and social challenges of our time. We reaffirm that freedom of expression is essential for peace and sustainable development in our region and the world".
The closing ceremony of the World Press Freedom Day 2024 Conference was also attended by the Minister of the General Secretariat of Government, Camila Vallejo, and UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, Tawfik Jelassi.
