Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium supports closing the last stage of negotiations for modernizing the Agreement between Chile and the European Union
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrés Allamand, continued with his scheduled meetings in the framework of his tour through Europe, highlighting the meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, Sophie Wilmes.
During the meeting, the Belgian Minister supported the impetus that has been being given to the modernization of the Association Agreement between Chile and the European Union. In this context, both reaffirmed their willingness to conclude the negotiations promptly, considering their respective ambitions for sustainable development.
Of special interest to the Belgian Foreign Ministry was the green hydrogen diplomacy, where Chile has leadership that will allow it to become a mainstay in the research and development of the “fuel of the future”, as a source of clean energy to move towards carbon neutrality. Also, the ministers agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation on Antarctic issues.
“We value the support of the Minister of Belgium for the modernization process of the Association Agreement between the EU and Chile. It is a great step for the strengthening of bilateral relations and the projection of joint work”, Allamand said.
The authorities also agreed to continue exploring economic and investment opportunities between Chile and Belgium. They also addressed the political situation in their countries, where Allamand presented the main advances in the constitutional process in Chile.
During the European morning, the Foreign Minister of Chile met with a group of deputies of the European Parliament, with whom he spoke about the economic impacts left by the COVID-19 pandemic, the projections of the relationship between the EU and Chile, as well as the progress of the last stage of negotiations to finalize the modernization of the Association Agreement that our country maintains with the European Union.
In the afternoon, the Minister traveled to Paris and at the end of the day met with his French counterpart, Jean-Yves Le Drian.
