Minister of Foreign Affairs celebrates approval of the Advanced Framework Agreement and Interim Trade Agreement in the European Parliament
The plenary of the European Parliament adopted the Advanced Framework Agreement (FAA) and the Interim Trade Agreement (ITA) between Chile and the European Union.
The decision of the European Parliament was welcomed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Alberto van Klaveren. "We are very pleased with the approval of both instruments. It is undoubtedly a very important step for the Advanced Framework Agreement to enter into force soon, an agreement that will undoubtedly give a significant boost to Chile's relationship with the European Union, setting new standards in trade and cooperation, including new issues such as combating climate change, gender and trade, social inclusion, among others," he said.
It should be noted that, in the first instance, the Interim Trade Agreement will enter into force, which does not require the approval of the EU Member States, but only the consent of the European Parliament. While the Interim Trade Agreement is in operation, the Political and Cooperation areas of the Association Agreement signed in 2002 will remain in force.
Once the ESA is ratified by the EU Member States, it will replace the Association Agreement signed in 2002, and the Interim Trade Agreement will cease to be in force.
