Wednesday, December 04th 2024

During his second day of a working visit to China, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren, met with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, at a meeting held at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing.

At the meeting, they reviewed the bilateral agenda of a relationship that is not only focused on economic matters. “China is Chile's largest trading partner, but our ties go beyond that. In recent decades we have worked hard to reach the comprehensive strategic partnership relationship we have today, based on trust, friendship and mutual respect,” said the Minister.

Both authorities discussed the celebration of 55 years of the diplomatic relationship and 20 years since the signing of the Free Trade Agreement, which will be celebrated next year. In this context, the Minister recalled the invitation made by the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric Font, to his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, to visit Chile.

They also emphasized that 2025 will mark the 10th anniversary of Chile Week China, valuing the importance that both countries attach to this trade promotion initiative, which during this week is being held in the cities of Beijing, Hangzhou, Chengdu and Guangzhou. “Year after year, Chile Week China reaffirms the strength of our ties. Bilateral exchange has grown steadily thanks to the joint efforts of public and private institutions and through this event we demonstrate the constant commitment of Chilean foreign policy and the relevance of China for our country,” added Minister van Klaveren.

Both ministers also highlighted the Belt and Road initiative, which has been supported by Chile since its entry in 2018, a reflection of the importance that our country attaches to China's contribution to global development through this and other projects. They also highlighted the importance of the CELAC-China forum, as a tool to strengthen ties between Latin America and the Caribbean with China.

In addition, the Foreign Affairs Minister emphasized that Chile invariably adheres to the principle of “One China”, which is the basis of bilateral relations and a permanent part of Chile's foreign policy.

He also held a meeting with the president of the Chinese People's Friendship Association with Foreign Countries, Yang Wanming, on the occasion they highlighted the possibilities of cooperation in the cultural, scientific and academic fields.
