Tuesday, June 11th 2024

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren, participated today in “Call to Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza”, a high-level international conference held in Jordan. This meeting aims to establish practical steps to deliver immediate aid to Gaza.

In his speech, the Foreign Affairs Minister stated that “the action of the international community is urgently needed, not only by providing humanitarian assistance, but also by supporting the main parties to create a political horizon that will allow the creation of a Palestinian state, living side by side with Israel, in conditions of both security and prosperity”.

The minister indicated that “Chile is home to the largest Palestinian community outside the Middle East. It is also home to a Jewish community that, although smaller in number, is very important. Both have contributed immensely to the enrichment of the Chilean social fabric. Our country has historically advocated the peaceful resolution of disputes and the recognition of both Israel and Palestine as sovereign states”.

In addition, he pointed out that “in response to the current conflict, the Government of Chile has called for full compliance with international law and international humanitarian law. We have unequivocally condemned the terrorist actions of Hamas and demand the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages. We also strongly condemn Israel's indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks against civilians in Gaza, especially women and children”.

During the meeting, the call for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine was emphasized, highlighting the need to ensure the conditions for an effective and safe delivery of humanitarian aid in Gaza, with the aim of protecting both civilians and international and NGO personnel engaged in the administration and delivery of assistance to the affected people.

It also reinforced the urgency of ending the escalation of human suffering, as well as the unconditional release of those kidnapped by Hamas.

The dialogue was led by Jordan's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Safadi, and was attended by representatives of various UN agencies and other international organizations.
