Declaration in support of President Bernardo Arévalo and Guatemalan democracy

Gathered in Guatemala City for the presidential swearing in, we call on the Congress of the Republic to comply with its constitutional mandate to hand over the power today, as required by the Constitution, to the elected President Bernardo Arévalo and Vice President Karin Herrera.

The Guatemalan people expressed their democratic will in a fair, free and transparent election, supported by the international community through its electoral observation missions. That will must be respected.

On behalf of all the delegations invited and represented here at the level of Heads of State and Government, Foreign Affairs Ministers and High Level officials, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), High Representative of the European Union and Ibero-American Secretary General.
