Chile and Kenya held consultations and expressed interest in strengthening bilateral ties
The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Gloria de la Fuente, and the Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kenya, Abraham Korir Sing'Oei, headed today the II Meeting of Political Consultations between the two countries.
At the meeting, held at the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nairobi, the authorities, together with their respective delegations, addressed the most relevant issues of the bilateral relationship. It should be noted that in 2025 Chile and Kenya will celebrate 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations.
“With almost five decades of excellent relations behind us, today we have the opportunity to get even closer, with the objective of building societies that provide greater well-being to our citizens. Let us work with this premise in mind,” said the Undersecretary.
They also highlighted the recent adoption of the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity in Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) and discussed Chile's proposal for Valparaiso to host the future Secretariat of the Agreement.
They also renewed their commitment to continue developing and strengthening cooperation in the areas of agriculture, forestry, mining and telecommunications.
In addition, the Undersecretary pointed out that Chile wishes to promote and strengthen bilateral and multilateral agendas with strategic partners in Africa, focused on the promotion of sustainable and inclusive development, the promotion of democracy and the protection of human rights.
Following the political consultations, the authorities signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Andrés Bello Diplomatic Academy of Chile and the Foreign Service Academy of Kenya.
During her working visit to Kenya, the Undersecretary also held meetings with the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Zainab Hawa Bangura, and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program, Inger Andersen. She also gave a master class on Feminist Foreign Policy at the University of Nairobi.
