Today, the XVI Round of Political Consultations and the meeting of the II Permanent Binational Commission between Chile and China were conducted successfully, led by the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gloria de la Fuente, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Hua Chunying.
The meeting of both mechanisms, held virtually, allowed to highlight the mutual trust and strong political support that characterizes the relationship between the two countries, strategic partners since 2012, whose relationship was elevated to comprehensive strategic partnership in 2016.
During the Political Consultations, the Acting Foreign Affairs Minister highlighted the shared attention in cultural, economic and trade matters, and the protection of biodiversity and the oceans, among other areas, where there is enormous potential for cooperation to be explored.
"We were able to review multiple issues of mutual interest in our 53 years of relationship. We talked about multilateral, bilateral, environmental, Antarctic and other matters of mutual collaboration", said the Acting Minister.
In this regard, she highlighted the importance that our country gives to caring for the environment, which is expressed in the Turquoise Foreign Policy. For this reason, Chile wishes to host the Secretariat of the Biodiversity Agreement beyond the areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) and hopes to have the support of China in this proposal. On the other hand, she reaffirmed our country's commitment to the "one China" principle.
Within the context of the Permanent Binational Commission, with the participation of other government ministerial authorities, they discussed cooperation in political, agricultural, mining, scientific-technological and Antarctic matters.
The authorities expressed their interest in deepening the path of collaboration and friendship forged since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1970, pledging to work together for the benefit of their peoples and the international community.
