105 countries endorse letter of support to UN Secretary General in response to declaration of persona non grata by the Government of Israel
A total of 105 countries signed a letter of support to the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, in view of the declaration of persona non grata by the Government of Israel. The initiative was led by Chile, through its mission to the United Nations, and was initially supported by Brazil, Colombia, South Africa, Uganda, Indonesia, Spain, Guyana and Mexico. The letter condemns the decision of the Israeli Foreign Affairs Ministry.
This significant endorsement reflects the majority support of the international community for the work of the organization's leader and the role of the United Nations, and reflects the leadership of Chile and President Gabriel Boric Font in the multilateral arena.
The letter states that actions of this nature undermine the ability of the United Nations to carry out its mandate, which includes mediating conflicts and providing humanitarian support. In the Middle East, this could further delay the end of all hostilities and the establishment of a credible path towards a solution of two states living side by side in peace and security.
At times of increasing tension, the role of the Secretary General is essential to foster dialogue and promote peace and understanding between the parties to the conflict, as well as the development of friendly relations between states.
The letter adds that the Secretary General's efforts reflect a shared desire to end the violence and to engage in meaningful dialogue in pursuit of a lasting peace in the Middle East. It also urges all parties to work constructively with the United Nations to seek a sustainable and just solution through diplomacy.
Through the letter, these UN member states call for respect for the leadership of the UN and its mission. Building constructive cooperation with the United Nations is vital to overcoming the challenges faced and achieving a peaceful future.
