Senate Foreign Relations Committee Approves Agreement with U.S. To Maintain Visa Waiver Program

Monday, April 9, 2018

With the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Ampuero, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously approved the agreement between the Republic of Chile and the United States of America regarding the Assignment of Ships' Security Officers and its Appendix.

This agreement is key to maintaining the validity of the Visa Waiver program, which exempts Chilean citizens from tourist visas when traveling to the United States.

Chile is the only country in Latin America that is part of the Visa Waiver program. In the four years of this initiative, nearly 500,000 Chileans have benefited from it.

"It was a very important step," said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who added that "what was done was to clarify the regulations, in accordance with our multilateral legislation and agreements".

The agreement voted on Monday by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee must now be seen by the Senate Chamber. The initiative had already been approved by the Chamber of Deputies last week.
