Thursday, August 30, 2018

The Director General of Consular Affairs and Immigration, Ambassador Raúl Sanhueza, opened on Thursday the follow-up technical meeting "Regional Workshop for the Development of Guidelines and/or Practice Guide for the Protection of Internally Displaced Persons in the Context of Disasters of the South American Conference on Migration".

The objective of the meeting was to discuss recent regional and international advances in the area of human mobility caused by disasters and the adverse effects of climate change, especially in the framework of the Global Compact for an orderly, safe and regular migration.

"For the Government of Chile, and especially for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, public policy on migration includes and considers the dimension of adequate and efficient border management, because we want safe, orderly and regular migration. And this is especially challenging when it occurs in the context of an eventual and probable disaster," said the Consular Director General.

The event was attended by the Deputy National Director of the National Emergency Office of the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security, Cristóbal Mena; the Director of the Consular Policy Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Devia; the President Pro Tempore of the South American Conference on Migration, Pedro Valenzuela; the Head of the Coordination Unit, Platform for Disaster Displacement, Atle Solberg; and Ezequiel Texidó, of the Technical Secretariat of the South American Conference on Migration.

Government representatives from Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Brazil, member countries of the South American Conference on Migration, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Migration of the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Carabineros of Chile, the Chilean Investigative Police, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and civil society also attended.

The activity was organized jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the South American Conference on Migration, the Platform on Disaster Displacement and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
