Statement by the States Parties to the Initiative for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament
The global pandemic of Covid-19 has prevented the 10th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty from starting this April 27th. However, the 12 States Parties to the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative recall, through this Joint Statement, the commemoration of 50 years since the Treaty's entry into force, a cornerstone of the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime.
Chile, through its commitment to multilateralism and the maintenance of international peace and security, is a supporter and promoter of the general and complete disarmament of all weapons of mass destruction. For this reason, we recognize and will continue to support the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which remains the main international legal instrument that provides an essential framework for nuclear disarmament, for limiting its proliferation and for guaranteeing the inalienable right of its States parties to access nuclear energy and technology for peaceful purposes.
