Chile joins the Global Ocean Alliance

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, through a letter recently sent to the Minister of the Environment of the United Kingdom, has formalized our country's membership to the Global Ocean Alliance.

This alliance, led by the United Kingdom, seeks to call for increased ambition in ocean conservation, ensuring that, by 2030, at least 30% of the ocean is under some system or type of marine protected area, and boosting the "30x30" initiative.

According to the latest scientific studies, such as those carried out by the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the ocean plays a very important role for the future of the environment at a global level, not only in the delivery of ecosystem services, but also as a key element for the mitigation of climate change.

Chile has made great progress in this area. We have 42% of our exclusive economic zone under protection, which positions us among the countries that lead the protection of the ocean.

In this way, Chile reinforces its commitment to ocean conservation and hopes that the international community will take on the challenges of protecting biodiversity and make progress in concrete actions to increase the ambition of conservation goals in order to ensure the sustainability of our planet for future generations.
