Chile is elected to chair the UN General Assembly's Sixth Committee
The Permanent Representative of Chile to the United Nations, Ambassador Milenko Skoknic, was elected this Thursday, 11 June, by the United Nations General Assembly, as Chairman of the Sixth Committee for the 75th session that begins in September 2020.
The Ambassador will be accompanied by Ghanshyam Bhandari of Nepal and Kristina Pelkiö of the Czech Republic as Vice-Chairs and Solomon Korbieh of Ghana as Rapporteur of the Commission.
This is the second time that a national representative will lead this Commission since Ambassador Hernán Salinas, now Permanent Representative to the OAS, led it at the 66th Session in 2011.
The support given by the countries of the United Nations to Chile demonstrates our country's commitment to the multilateral system and is a recognition of the competencies of our diplomacy, Chile's position in favor of solid international law and a system for the peaceful settlement of disputes, applied in accordance with the principles and provisions of the United Nations Charter.
The Sixth Committee
Also known as the Legal Commission, the Sixth Committee brings together the legal advisers of all the States Members of the United Nations and is mainly responsible for dealing with legal matters submitted to the General Assembly and adopting resolutions on legal matters. It also reviews the reports and drafts issued by the International Law Commission in its role as codifier of customary law and of the progressive development of international law.
