Chancellor Ampuero: " The relation between Chile and South Korea go through a great moment."

Monday, 29 April 2019

During President Sebastián Piñera's State Visit to the Republic of Korea, Foreign Minister Roberto Ampuero signed a Defense Cooperation Agreement with the Asian country.

This instrument establishes a context for the promotion and development of sectoral cooperation mechanisms in areas such as personnel exchanges, humanitarian assistance, peacekeeping operations, and natural disasters, among others.

In Chancellor Ampuero's opinion, "relations between Chile and South Korea are going through a great moment, which reflected in our fluid political dialogue. Korea, one of the 11 largest economies in the world, is our fifth largest trading partner, and in that sense, we committed ourselves to accelerate the process of modernizing our Free Trade Agreement and Korea's association with the Pacific Alliance.

"Both nations share values such as a commitment to democracy, respect for human rights, the rule of law and free trade. We value President Moon's role in his goal of denuclearizing the Korean peninsula," he added.

To the agreement signed in Defense are added the instruments related to modernization of the State, transport, and technology. Also, the leaders added four new priority areas for joint work: advancing towards digital government at the service of citizens, fully joining the knowledge and information society, collaborating on cybersecurity and promoting free trade and multilateralism.

In this sense, the Secretary of State emphasized that "in addition to the interest in promoting investments in infrastructure, cybersecurity, transportation and telecommunications, we also collaborate on Antarctic issues, clean energy, health and dialogue among our Cooperation Agencies.

Early in the morning, the Minister accompanied President Piñera to deposit a floral offering at the Seoul National Cemetery, after which they went to the Blue House, the name given to the Government Palace. There he participated in the meeting that the President held with his counterpart, Moon Jae-in.

Later, together with the President, he attended a meeting with Korean businesspeople, among them the leaders of the country's leading associations and top executives of local companies.
In the afternoon, he visited the Samsung Innovation Museum, where the history of innovation from the invention of electricity to the present day are exhibit. Then they went to SK T.um, technology center, where people experience a simulation of what the world would be like in the future.
