Undersecretary Ximena Fuentes participates in conference on ocean protection and highlights the impulse of a Turquoise Foreign Policy

Wednesday, May 25th 2022

The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Ximena Fuentes, participated today in the "Blue Talk" event, organized at ECLAC, together with the Embassy of Portugal and the United Nations System in Chile, which seeks to promote debate and interest in matters related to the ocean, its conservation and the sustainable use of its resources, in line with Sustainable Development Goal No. 14 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
In her speech, the Undersecretary emphasized that "our policy of conservation and sustainable use of the ocean has been consolidated as a State policy. This way, we have projected this vision in various multilateral mechanisms, sending a message about the need to advance in concrete actions to ensure the ocean’s long-term health".

She also emphasized that Chile, as an oceanic country, is promoting a Turquoise Foreign Policy committed to international processes that seek to generate concrete and ambitious actions aimed at ocean conservation.
"We believe that we must act in a coherent manner and generate the necessary connections in the international framework. This will allow us, collectively, to move towards an increasing ambition in the face of the challenges of the climate crisis, the loss of biodiversity, and global pollution, including the ocean. This integrated approach is the basis of what we have called a Turquoise Foreign Policy, which unites green issues with the blue agenda," said the Undersecretary.

The activity is part of the preparations for the Second United Nations Ocean Conference to be held from June 27 to July 1 in Lisbon, Portugal, and where the international community will seek new ways to move towards more sustainable uses of the ocean, covering areas such as sustainable fisheries, climate change, pollution and conservation of ecosystems.

Chile will be present in Lisbon, represented by the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, who will participate in the various activities of the Conference, and will co-chair, with Spain, the Interactive Dialogue "Management, protection, conservation and restoration of marine and coastal ecosystems".
