Statement by the Government of Chile on the occasion of the Inter-Korean Summit

Friday, April 27, 2018

The Government of Chile expresses its satisfaction at the organization of the Inter-Korean Summit, which was held today in the town of Panmunjeom and brought together for the first time in almost eleven years the Heads of State of the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The Government of Chile welcomes the efforts made by the Republic of Korea in hosting this initiative and hopes that the talks between President Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong-un will enable the dialogue and understanding on the Korean peninsula to resume and be definitively consolidated.

Chile has consistently supported the goal of achieving the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula in a comprehensive, verifiable and irreversible manner. It has also supported and implemented the United Nations Security Council resolutions that contain legislation to this effect.

In its commitment to international peace and security, the Government of Chile encourages both parties to continue to make progress in peaceful dialogue for the construction of a stable relationship, based on trust and mutual respect.
