Minister Ampuero announce the submission of documents to the International Criminal Court regarding the situation in Venezuela

Wednesday, September 26, 2018

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Ampuero, announced the sending of antecedents to the International Criminal Court, with the aim of investigating the situation regarding crimes against humanity within the jurisdiction of the Court that could have been committed in Venezuela and, if necessary, establishing the responsibilities corresponding to one or more specific persons.

Amidst the activities of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Chancellor Ampuero made the announcement jointly with his counterparts from Argentina, Canada, Paraguay and Peru.

The document, which will be sent to the International Criminal Court, was signed by the Presidents of the countries mentioned, in addition to Colombia. This request is preceded by the report on the situation of human rights in Venezuela prepared by the Group of Independent Experts appointed by the Secretary General of the OAS and also refers to the reports of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The referral of information by the countries parties is provided for in the Rome Statute itself.

"What we want as countries is for these allegations to be investigated and for the guilty to be identified, discovered and found," said the Foreign Minister in making the announcement. "For Chile there is a very clear message that human rights violations in Venezuela cannot continue," he added.

According to ICC procedures, after receiving this presentation, the Prosecutor's Office analyzes whether merits are given to initiate a prior investigation, before deciding whether to open an investigation process.
