Foreign Minister visits works on route Y-85 that will improve access to Puerto Williams from Punta Arenas
With a visit to the construction site of route Y-85, located in the central-southern sector of the Isla Grande from Tierra del Fuego, continued the second day of visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Ampuero, to the Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica. This road will significantly improve access to Puerto Williams from Punta Arenas, reducing to 12 hours a journey that currently takes 34 hours by sea.
On the matter, the Chancellor indicated that "with that, the possibilities of strengthening the economic development of Port Williams will grow exponentially, opening new tourist routes and its position as an entrance door to Antarctica: both for scientific and tourist activities, both of growing importance at global level, both in strategic and economic terms".
"The Magallanes Region, the southern seas and Antarctica constitute a single large area, which elements strengthen each other. A single large area of strategic relevance for Chile and for the projection of its international image," added the Secretary of State.
Today's day also included a visit to Timaukel, a community in the province of Tierra del Fuego that has only 405 inhabitants. There, the Minister shared with the inhabitants of the area. Later, he moved to Porvenir, where he will hold meetings with local authorities' tomorrow.
The purpose of the Chancellor's trip is to identify actions and initiatives that will strengthen the development of the southern zone.
