Foreign Minister Ampuero specifies to APEC ministers priorities for summit to be organized by Chile in 2019

Thursday, November 15, 2018

Foreign Minister Roberto Ampuero participated in the joint APEC 2018 Foreign and Trade Ministers meeting in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. As host, Papua New Guinea set the motto "Harnessing Inclusive Opportunities, Embracing the Digital Future", emphasizing the themes of inclusive growth, connectivity and digital economy.

In this framework, the Chancellor told his peers how our country is preparing for APEC. "APEC has been delivering positive results for the people of the region for three decades. During the year in Chile we want to reinvigorate this focus on our people. We firmly believe that the concept of a people-centered APEC will be essential for the successful future of APEC," he said.

In that sense, he unveiled the APEC 2019 motto, "Connecting people, building the future," highlighting the priorities that Chile proposed for the APEC year-long debate.

The first is Digital Society, which will focus on the need to equip societies with the tools and skills to ensure full participation in the digital economy.

The second is framed within the concept of Industrial Revolution 4.0 and aims to bring together and highlight APEC initiatives that support this new reality, focused on Global Value Chains, Intelligent Borders, Intelligent Logistics, Talent and the role of micro, small and medium enterprises.

Another priority will be Women and Growth. In this regard, the Minister stressed that "increasing women's participation in the economy is fundamental. It is one of the most important factors in reducing poverty and ensuring that people share in the benefits of growth".

Finally, everything Chile does will be framed under the umbrella of "Sustainable, Comprehensive and Inclusive Growth". "We want to address the effects on our oceans caused by illegal fishing and marine debris. We must not forget that it is the Pacific Ocean that unites us. Financial inclusion, sustainable energy and investments and good regulatory practices are also some of the issues that we want to include in the APEC agenda during 2019," he explained.

"We want to ensure that APEC continues to build on the important reputation it has established to foster ideas and initiatives that will eventually have a global impact," concluded Chancellor Ampuero.

The working sessions of the ministers today were divided into two plenary sessions, the first focused on improving connectivity, deepening regional economic integration. The second dealt with the promotion of sustainable and inclusive growth through structural reforms. On both occasions, the different representatives of the Asia-Pacific countries took part.

After the ministers' meeting, the annual APEC leaders' summit will take place next Saturday and Sunday, with the participation of the President of the Republic, Sebastián Piñera. In this instance, Chile will officially assume as host of APEC 2019, a symbolic opportunity since it is 15 years since Chile first hosted it and just when the forum celebrates 30 years of existence.
