The Government of Chile greets and welcomes with hope the Quito Agreement, recently signed in Ecuador, by which the Government of Colombia and the ELN have agreed to a bilateral and temporary ceasefire.
This agreement, the first of its kind in more than half a century of conflict, constitutes an important step forward in the negotiations, as it promotes mutual trust and paves the way for a definitive peace. It is also a noble gesture in the face of the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to Colombia, which has strongly influenced the Parties.
The Government of Chile, in its capacity as the guarantor country of these negotiations, alongside commending the desire expressed in this Agreement by the Government of Colombia and the ELN, reiterates its commitment to continue contributing decisively to the search for and consolidation of peace in the sister Republic of Colombia.
