As a non-permanent member of the Security Council, Chile welcomes the progress made at the meeting held today in Geneva to discuss the situation in Ukraine.
The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the Russian Federation, United States and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs agreed on initial concrete steps to de-escalate tensions between the parties and restore security for all citizens in Ukraine.
Core issues to initiate this process were addressed at this stage, in order to overcome the crisis: rejecting and condemning violence, the various forms of extremism, racism and religious intolerance. The accord also called for illegal groups to disarm and reestablish citizen security.
Chile is confident that these steps and the establishment of a national and inclusive dialogue will contribute to restore peace and stability in that country.
