The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfredo Moreno, spoke this morning at the UN Security Council open debate "Promotion and strengthening of the rule of law in the maintenance of international peace and security." The Secretary of State participated in the debate on behalf of Chile, a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the period 2014-2015.

"Chile is just starting out as a member of the Security Council; we will remain on it for two years and I believe that during this time Chile will carry out a very important task. Whenever there is a complex situation in the world, it ends up in the hands of the Security Council and Chile will have a voice, which will be the same voice as ever, in favor of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as we discussed today," said Minister Moreno.

He then added, "Today's debate on the rule of law is such an important matter for Chileans. We all know that without rule of law there is no democracy, no protection of human rights and this is particularly true in the peacekeeping missions conducted by the Security Council. I believe this debate will help to ensure that future operations place even greater emphasis not only to bring peace to countries,  but also to  ensure thereof   the rule of law is upheld to prevent any further conflicts in the future "

Following his speech, Minister Moreno held a meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.
