Foreign Minister Ampuero describes the first 2+2 mechanism meeting with Brazil as a "historic milestone"

Foreign Minister Roberto Ampuero described today's meeting in Brasilia of the 2+2 mechanism between Chile and Brazil as a "historic milestone", the first in the history of the relationship between the two countries and which was attended by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence of both countries.

The Secretary of State attended the meeting together with his Defence counterpart, Alberto Espina. For Brazil, meanwhile, were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aloysio Nunes, and the Minister of Defense, Joaquim Silva y Luna.

"In the meeting we reviewed the main international policy issues, the world economy, regional issues, such as the crises in Venezuela and Nicaragua, cooperation in Antarctica, science and technology, gender issues," said Foreign Minister Ampuero, who also highlighted the harmony between the two countries to progress in the convergence between the Pacific Alliance and Mercosur, as well as progress in the negotiations for a bilateral Free Trade Agreement.

In addition, the Minister stressed that it was agreed to promote a system of consular cooperation, so that Chilean consulates can help Brazilian citizens where this country does not have a consulate, and vice versa. "These are concrete issues that directly benefit our citizens".

After the meeting, the representatives of both countries signed three documents: a Complementary Protocol to the Agreement between the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Government of the Republic of Chile on Cooperation in Defence matters; another concerning the Exchange of Defence Data and Cataloguing Services; and a Declaration of Intent between the Ministry of Defence of Chile and the Ministry of Defence of Brazil on cooperation in Cyber Defence.
