Fernando Schmidt appointed new Ambassador to Trinidad & Tobago

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Heraldo Muñoz, informed that the President of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet, has appointed Fernando Schmidt Ariztía Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Chile to the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, a country which has already given its agreement.

Ambassador Schmidt, a career diplomat, pursued college education at the Law School of the Catholic University of Chile. Additionally, he was a Fellow of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Munich and holds a Master's degree in International Relations from the Ortega y Gasset Institute in Madrid

He has been Ambassador of Chile to the Republic of Korea, Australia, Hungary and Brazil, and Consul in Ushuaia, Argentina. He has also performed duties at the Embassies of Chile to Germany, Spain and in the Chilean Delegation to the OAS.

In Santiago, he was Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs from March 2010 to November 2012.

Furthermore, he has been Director of the Areas of South America, European Affairs; North America and Asia Pacific of the Foreign Ministry.

Ambassador Schmidt has been professor at the Universities of Los Andes and Diego Portales and served as counselor for the Chile Pacific Foundation.
