Chile ratifies the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty

The Permanent Representative of Chile to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Milenko Skoknic, today deposited the instrument of ratification of the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, confirming Chile's commitment to the effective regulation of the international trade in conventional arms.

The Treaty, which aims to reduce human suffering caused by illegal and irresponsible arms transfers and improve regional and global security and stability, seeks to promote accountability and transparency. It also recognizes that peace, security, development and human rights are the pillars of the United Nations system and includes among the grounds for denying the transfer of conventional arms the possibility that they may be used to commit or facilitate a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

The Arms Trade Treaty, which entered into force internationally on December 24, 2014, was signed by our country on June 3, 2013. Chile thus becomes the 95th State Party to the Treaty.
