At the initiative of Chile and the United States, the United Nations Security Council will hold a meeting on Monday, August 24, to address the attacks on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons by the terrorist group, Islamic State.

At the meeting, called "Vulnerable Groups in Conflict: Targeted ISIS Attacks Against LGBT People," the testimony of two victims will be heard: an Iraqi and a Syrian. In addition, Jessica Stern, Executive Director of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, will make a presentation.

This is the first time the UN Security Council will address the specific issue of the rights of LGBT people, and the threat it poses to international peace and security.

This initiative is in response to one of the priorities of our country in the Security Council: to promote the protection of civilians in armed conflict.
