Under Secretary Edgardo Riveros opened, alongside the Director of the Diplomatic Academy, Juan Somavia, the conference dictated by UNESCO Director-general, Irina Bokova, which was titled "2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: the educational and cultural dimension". The lecture, that took place in "Andrés Bello" Diplomatic Academy, was attended by the Minister of Social Development, Marcos Barraza; the Under Secretary of Sports, Nicole Saez; other national high authorities; members of the diplomatic crops; and members of the academia and the civil society.

In his intervention, the Under Secretary stressed UNESCO's role in the formulation of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and he associated the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, "Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning" with the human right to education. Likewise, he highlighted Bokova's leadership, as she has promoted culture as a driving force in development within the Institution, in addition with diplomacy and cooperation in the scientific field. He finished by reinforcing Chile's commitment with the efforts UNESCO is making in areas that are relevant for our country's development, such as the protection of our heritage and the production of educational, scientific and cultural ideas in the public politics sphere.

The Director-General, for her part, referred, amongst other topics, to the development and sustainability approach that has been promoted by UNESCO, pointing out that both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement are part of the same program to promote the respect for human rights, eradication of poverty and sustainability. While alluding to education, she highlighted the importance of SGD 4 for the emancipation of men and women and emphasised the need of quality education, that provides people with relevant abilities and promotes the protection of cultural diversity. The Director-General praised the recent presentation of Chile's Voluntary National Review regarding the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in the United Nations.
