Minister Muñoz accompanied President Bachelet in the inauguration of the Official Visit to Ecuador and IV Inter-Ministerial Cabinet in Galapagos

On Monday, Foreign Minister Heraldo Muñoz participated in the official visit that President Michelle Bachelet made to Ecuador in conjunction with the IV Interministerial Cabinet between the two countries.

The first activity took place early in the morning on Santa Cruz Island, where President Bachelet met with her Ecuadorian counterpart, Lenin Moreno, along with their respective delegations.

On the occasion, both authorities addressed issues of mutual interest such as education, security, environment and defence, among others.

After the meeting, Foreign Minister Muñoz said that the aim of the meeting was to renew the bonds of "great friendship that have existed between our two countries.

The Minister also highlighted the signing of agreements on military, cultural and sports cooperation. He added that there are important investments by Chile in mining in Ecuador through Codelco, and areas of coincidence in multilateral policy.

With regard to international politics, the Minister assured that both countries have very similar positions, stressing that the two nations "are guarantors of peace negotiations between the last Colombian guerrilla group that is the ELN and the Colombian government".

The Minister stressed that an additional issue uniting the two countries today is the protection of the oceans. "President Lenin Moreno, given Chile's leadership in creating marine protected areas and combating plastic pollution and illegal fishing, decided that the best place to meet in Ecuador was in these Galapagos Islands, which are also an example of conservation".
