Comparte :

As of tomorrow 1 January 2014 until 31 December 2015, Chile will become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the main organ with primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. Previously, Chile has been part of this body on four opportunities: 1952-1953, 1961-1962, 1996-1997 y 2003-2004.

Chile will continue to contribute to the strengthening of an effective multilateralism so that the Security Council can continue to make specific contributions to the prevention and resolution of crises affecting international peace and security in different regions of the world.

Chile will perform its work guided by the founding principles of the United Nations, namely, the sovereign equality of States, non-intervention, the enforcement and respect for international treaties, the respect and promotion of human rights, democracy, and the peaceful settlement of disputes. This, with the certainty that the complex problems and current challenges require global solutions based on cooperation and solidarity.

From the Security Council, Chile will continue to exercise its international responsibilities, supporting initiatives that strengthen the work of the United Nations in its three pillars: international peace and security, human rights and development, from a person-centered perspective. Chile renews its commitment to peacekeeping and peace-observing efforts, particularly, those that have the participation of India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), Middle East (UNTSO), Cyprus (UNFICYP), Haiti (MINUSTAH), and Bosnia and Herzegovina (EUFOR-ALTHEA).

Finally, Chile's membership to the Security Council provides an opportunity for our country to make a substantive contribution to the international system, promoting solutions based in the principles and values underpinning its Foreign Policy, in the framework of a State Policy.
